Your phlebotomy certification doesn’t last forever. ASCP PBT requires 36 CE hours every 3 years; NHA CPT requires 10-20 CE hours every 2 years. Here’s where to find legitimate CE credits, what actually counts toward renewal, and what to avoid.
What Counts as CE for Phlebotomy Renewal
Both ASCP and NHA require CE content to be relevant to laboratory science, phlebotomy, or healthcare. The specific rules:
ASCP PBT renewal CE requirements: 36 hours total over the 3-year renewal cycle. At least 12 hours must be in laboratory-specific content. Up to 6 hours may be non-laboratory healthcare content (patient safety, infection control, HIPAA compliance, etc.). Employer-provided in-service training can count if properly documented. No single activity can account for more than 18 of the 36 hours required.
NHA CPT renewal CE requirements: 10 CE hours for first renewal, 20 CE hours for subsequent renewals, within the 2-year certification period. Content must be relevant to healthcare or the certified role.
Both organizations require documentation, a certificate of completion with the provider name, content topic, date, and CE hour credit awarded. Keep your certificates. You may be selected for a CE audit.
Free Phlebotomy CE Sources
ASCP Online Learning Center
ASCP offers a free CE module catalog through its online learning center at ascp.org. Many modules are free for ASCP members; non-members can access a limited free catalog. Topics include specimen collection, pre-analytical errors, laboratory safety, and blood banking. Each module includes a post-test and issues a CE certificate upon completion. ASCP CE credits are automatically documented in your ASCP record when completed on their platform.
LabCE (Laboratory Continuing Education)
LabCE.com provides free and subscription CE modules for laboratory professionals including phlebotomists. The free tier gives access to a rotating set of modules with post-tests and CE certificates. Subscription tiers provide broader access. Topics range from specimen collection and handling to microbiology and blood banking. LabCE is ASCP-accepted.
American Medical Technologists (AMT)
AMT publishes free CE articles and online modules. While primarily aimed at AMT credential holders, the content counts as CE for ASCP PBT renewal when the topic is relevant to phlebotomy. AMT’s free CE articles are available without membership.
Employer In-Service Training
Mandatory annual training at your employer (bloodborne pathogen refresher, infection control, HIPAA, competency assessments) often qualifies for CE credit. Your employer may or may not provide formal CE certificates for this training. If they do, save the certificates and document the hours. If they don’t automatically issue CE certificates, ask HR whether the training is documented in a way that can support your renewal.
Webinars from Professional Organizations
CLMA (Clinical Laboratory Management Association), ASCLS (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science), and state laboratory associations host free webinars with CE credit. Many are free to attend live. These are often the most current content available, regulatory changes, new collection standards, or emerging infectious disease protocol updates.
Low-Cost CE Options
CLMA Membership
Clinical Laboratory Management Association membership includes access to a CE library. Annual membership costs approximately $100,150 for laboratorians, and CE access is included. If you complete more than 3-5 CE modules from their library, the membership pays for itself versus purchasing CE modules individually.
State Laboratory Association Conferences
State lab association annual meetings typically offer 6-12 CE hours in a single day or weekend. Conference registration for members is usually $75,200, substantially cheaper per CE hour than purchasing individual online modules. These are also valuable for networking.
Community College Healthcare Continuing Education
Many community colleges with phlebotomy or medical laboratory programs offer healthcare CE courses at low cost for local professionals. Topics like phlebotomy refresher courses, infection control, or clinical skills updates typically qualify for ASCP and NHA renewal credit.
What to Avoid
Unaccredited online CE mills: Websites that sell CE certificates without meaningful content or assessment. These are often not accepted by ASCP or NHA, and using them to fraudulently claim CE credit you didn’t complete is a credential ethics violation.
YouTube videos: Watching phlebotomy content on YouTube is valuable for learning but does not produce a CE certificate and does not count toward renewal.
General health or wellness content: CE content must be relevant to your professional role. A 10-hour online nutrition course does not qualify as phlebotomy CE regardless of who provides it.
When in doubt about whether a CE source is accepted, verify with ASCP or NHA before completing the activity. Both organizations have customer service that can answer CE questions.
Managing Your CE Timeline
Don’t wait until your final month. CE hours that expire before your renewal date don’t count, they must be completed within your current certification period. A practical approach: complete 12 hours per year for ASCP PBT (36 over 3 years), or 5-10 hours per year for NHA CPT. Spreading CE over the certification period keeps you current with industry developments and prevents a last-minute scramble.
Set a calendar reminder for 6 months before your certification expiration. That gives you time to complete any remaining CE and submit your renewal application before the deadline.
