Exam Overview

The NHA CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) exam is administered by the National Healthcareer Association and is one of the most accessible phlebotomy certifications. It tests entry-level competency in all major phlebotomy procedures and is ideal for students new to the field or career changers.

The exam consists of 100 questions total: 80 that count toward your score and 20 pretest questions. You have 2 hours to complete the exam. A passing score of 390 on the 200-to-500 scaled-score range is required to earn your credential.

Exam Update: January 2026

What Changed in the New NHA CPT Exam (January 7, 2026)

NHA released a new version of the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam on January 7, 2026. New study materials and practice tests went live October 8, 2025 to give candidates time to prepare for the updated content.

Per NHA, the changes affect the test plan rather than the underlying scope. Anyone testing for the first time on or after January 7, 2026 should use the latest study materials. Anyone who failed within 30 days of the launch is required to retake against the new exam version, not the prior one.

What stays the same: the 100-question format (80 scored + 20 pretest), the 2-hour time limit, the 390 passing score on the 200-to-500 scaled range, and the core competency areas of safety, patient preparation, routine and special collections, and specimen processing.

What to do: if your study materials predate October 8, 2025, refresh against the current version. The PhlebotomySkills content below is aligned with the post-January-2026 test plan. For the official test plan and FAQ, see NHA's announcement.
